"(E-)LIFE IS (NOT) STRANGE”: VIDEO GAME-BASED FOREIGN LANGUAGE LEARNING IN HIGHER EDUCATION (& THE NEW FRONTIERS OF VR)

Professor Simone Bregni

Associate Professor of Italian and Chair of the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures at Saint Louis University

Currently, some commercially available video games can be useful to engage students so as to better understand and communicate in foreign/second languages. Some particular video games can also effectively deliver cultural content. Others (the so-called “serious games”) are specifically designed by academics in order to assist and enhance learning in a variety of fields, such as languages, but also in the humanities, the natural sciences, and social sciences. This presentation will demonstrate the advantages of task-based problem solving, agency, and total body response that such games afford. No previous gaming experience is necessary! Materials for the creation of a mini-lesson and a lesson plan using video games as realia will be provided.
