The Italian Studies Section is pleased to announce that Rhiannon Daniels, Senior Lecturer in Italian in the School of Modern Languages of the University of Bristol, is the inaugural fellow of the new SIMS/Italian Studies Fellowship. The fellowship is sponsored by the Section, the Center for Italian Studies, and the Schoenberg Institute for Manuscript Studies. The recipient spends one week at Penn working on manuscript material from the library’s collections of rare books and manuscripts (Kislak), offering, in exchange, a graduate-student workshop and a talk on the research conducted while in residence.

Prof. Daniels will be in residence at Penn this week. She wlll give a talk this Thursday, Jan. 24, at 5pm in the Orrery Pavillon on the 6th floor of Van Pelt Library entitled 

Writing and Reading Rubrics in the Renaissance Decameron

Abstract:

Rubrics, or headings, are a key component of the textual organization of Boccaccio’s Decameron, as well as a fundamental part of the material history of manuscript culture. Occupying a space which includes both the authorial text and its editorial construction, rubrics allow us to consider the ways in which page design reflects modes of premodern authorship and reading practices. This paper will bring together narratological analysis and material culture approaches to consider the way in which rubrics have played a vital role in shaping interpretation of the Decameron.
