Luca Cottini, Assistant Professor of Italian Studies at Villanova University will present a chapter from a book-in-progress that explores the social and cultural reception of gramophones and sound recording technologies in Italy, in the early 20th century. He will discuss the impact of Caruso’s records on the worldwide success of Italian opera, the relationship between opera and the birth of Italian graphic design, and how the new music industry brought opera's golden age to an end.
